How to create a PDF
Sometimes when we print a file people complain that it doesn’t look like it did on their screen. This is usually because we don’t have the same fonts or are using different print drivers. For best results, save your work as a PDF and email this file to us – you are much more likely to get exactly what you expect.
Many newer software packages have built-in PDF converters these days, but please double check the settings. You generally want the print-quality settings for highest resolution (300dpi is recommended) – don’t choose any settings that minimise file sizes or are for web publishing as this reduces print quality. Here are some packages that have it built in:
- Open Office/Libre Office
- Mac OS X has a “Print to PDF” button on the main print dialog for all applications
- Microsoft Office 2010 now has a very good PDF converter (from the File menu choose Save and Send then look for the PDF functions)
If your software can’t output directly to PDF you can download a PDF converter (Windows based systems). Most install a printer driver on your system and you simply “print” to this driver and it will ask you where to save the file. Viola! a tidy PDF has been created ready to send. If you don’t have one, we recommend the CutePDF Writer application from www.cutepdf.com. It is FREE and very easy to use for normal documents (for PCs only).
